Critic-Ass (El Hoyo Crítico): THOR

MYTHOLOGY NÉRDICA
For Barnabas Quiroga

only one year after IRON MAN 2 (2010), Marvel Studios continues the ambitious and far foolproof plan to present on the big screen four of his most iconic characters, then bring them together in one film. This plan will conclude with the premiere exponent of the most important and anticipated superhero movies of recent years: The Avengers (THE AVENGERS, 2012). But with several months of tortuous lies ahead, we can not do more than sit in his chair to enjoy the two remaining comiqueras adaptations. One of them is Captain America: THE FIRST AVENGER, the source of the Super Soldier (Chris Evans) who come to theaters in Argentina on 28 July. The other is THOR (2011), a magnificent epic of the subgenus released in theaters a few weeks ago. With a great cast, clever script and a lot of juicy references and nods to the comics (or pure nerdgasmos , one might say), the new film by Kenneth Branagh is the best class entertainment.

Not being the most famous person in the Marvel Universe, surely many will not know who he is Thor. In this film, Thor (played by Chris Hemsworth) is the God of Thunder, for his arrogance and irresponsibility, is banished from the mystical realm of Asgard and sent to Earth by his father Odin (Anthony Hopkins). There, with the help of a scientist (Natalie Portman) and her colleagues (Kat Dennings and Stellan Skarsgard), have to become a hero to save humanity from the plans of his resentful brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston), the God of Deception. With so many gods and mystical realms floating around, it was hard to imagine a way in which this story fit with the two parts of IRON MAN and HULK: THE INCREDIBLE MAN (THE INCREDIBLE HULK, 2008), all located in a world of scientific explanations, all in all, logical. But Stuidos Marvel found a way and, says Jane Foster (Portman), "magic is just science that still do not understand" Bingo! Everything that happens in THOR seem to be like magic, but also has a scientific explanation and, in all logic: Asgard is a parallel dimension from which they came to Earth - at the time of the Vikings and by a wormhole (or Bifrost for them) - its powerful people, and we take as deities. Presented flawlessly, all these explanations help to give freshness and originality separating THOR from other superhero movies. And although some initial sequence with the history of Asgard, Midgard and Jotunheim can be a bit long (after all, one could say that the principle of per se film is when Odin banishes his son) is difficult to lose the interest to see the comic come to life on screen.

No doubt this was a risky project, but the writers were able to find a way to stay true to the realistic style previously proposed, no disrespect to cartoons. may sometimes, if we observe them carefully, costumes, and other Asgardian Thor is not credible - so maybe the Thunder God used his helmet only once in the film - or that the makeup of Giants Ice makes them look more like villains in "Power Rangers" that a Hollywood mega-production, but its director did such a good job of telling this story we spend the 114 minutes without thinking about anything else. THOR pace never drops, and his tone perfectly complements the IRON MAN. However, this does not make it superior and more original or entertaining it may be, fails to become the best that Marvel Studios did so far. In part, I think because the protagonist never becomes as charismatic as Tony Stark Robert Downey Jr . The fault is not Chris Hemsworth, who holds the weight of the film despite being an unknown. The problem here is that no room for the actor is brilliant, and best scenes (acting speaking) the delivered Hopkins (A great as always) and Hiddleston (A Surprise acting!). Still, Hemsworth is hilarious in moments of comedy (many, to everyone's surprise) rather than bad-ass in the battle scenes and a real dramatic actor with a promising future.

Like IRON MAN 2 (2010), the script is full of characters and story lines that determines several factors. First, fights - Thor, Loky, Volstagg, Sif, and Hogun Fandral Vs Ice Giants, Thor Vs SHIELD; Volstagg, Sif, Fandral, Hogun and Thor vs. The Destroyer, Thor Vs Loki - are spectacular, but short. Second, everything happens very fast - Loki's transformation into the evil and the "love" between Thor and Jane, as Thor change his personality, he becomes a hero and agree to cooperate with SHIELD in the future (!!!) -. And third, wasted more than an actor - Rene Russo (Frigga) goes unnoticed, Portman can not prove how talented he is, Dennings is confined to be the comic relief, Skarsgård could have had more scenes, etc.. -. But faithfully adapting a universe as rich as "Thor" required certain sacrifices, and it was expected that something like this happened. At least everything and all provide the right and necessary to the film, and the delicate balance l or what happens on Earth and what happens in Asgard remains. Wobbles slightly on Earth, but remains .

Louis Unlike "The Incredible Hulk" Leterrier and Jon "Iron Man 1 and 2" Favreau, Kenneth Branagh is not only a film director who knows good cinema entertainment but good movies in general. His tenure in films HENRY V (1989), FRANKENSTEIN (1994) and HAMLET (1996) endowed it with an elegant style that is felt in THOR. And though sometimes abused overhead shot, aberrant angles (camera crooked, in Creole) and others, his skill as a filmmaker is another plus for the film and appreciate it better now that I have, since, certainly not Joe "Captain America" \u200b\u200band Joss Johnston "The Avengers" will give us an address Whedon as polished as this.

To be honest, expected nothing from this adaptation. My chips were on CAPTAIN AMERICA, THE FIRST AVENGER. But more than once, a critic is wrong - how many times I have been mistaken in these paragraphs? -. THOR is epic, intelligent, funny and very well thought out. His designs and visual effects are amazing, exciting and inspiring artist, and the cast that brought Marvel Studios is again indicated. And if that does not convince the fans, no doubt you will be satisfied with references ultra nerds - can see a poster with the phrase "Journey Into Mystery (Thor ago its first appearance in the No. 83 comic "Journey Into Mystery") and no mention of Donald Blake (alter-ego of the God of Thunder in the comics), Bruce Banner / Hulk ( "I met a scientist. A pioneer in gamma radiation. One day he appeared SHIELD and ... never heard of him " said Selvig) and Tony Stark / Iron Man (" This is one of Stark? ", one officer asked to see the Destroyer) - the magnificent cameos - the Stan Lee trying to get the Mjölnir with his truck, and Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton / Hawkeye (!) - and the many connections The Avengers with (THE AVENGERS, 2012), as the scene after credits (spoilers ) - with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) by showing Selvig the Cosmic Cube, and Loki planning to use - (F OF SPOILERS IN ) advanced by more than expected. Thor, Marvel Studios once again demonstrates that he knows what he is doing and what we, the fans nerds want. Now, keep waiting. and we pray to the god Thor the level does not decay and CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER and THE AVENGERS be as great as we expect them to be. Amen.
